China retains spot as Germany’s leading trading partner in 2025

With a foreign trade turnover (total of goods exports and imports) of €251.8 billion (~$297.12 billion), China was Germany’s most important trading partner again in 2025, a title it also held in the period from 2016 to 2023, according to the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis).

China overtook the United States, which had been Germany’s top trading partner in 2024. In 2025, the US was once again Germany’s second most important trading partner, with a foreign trade turnover of €240.5 billion (~$283.79 billion).

While trade in goods with China grew by 2.1 per cent in the previous year, trade with the United States declined by 5.0 per cent. This was primarily due to the continuing increase in imports from China, coupled with falling exports to the United States. The Netherlands was Germany’s third most important trading partner after China and the United States, with exports and imports having a total value of €209.1 billion (~$246.74 billion) (+3.3 per cent).

In 2025, China regained its position as Germany’s top trading partner with a foreign trade turnover of $297.12 billion, surpassing the United States ($283.79 billion), whose trade fell 5 per cent.
Germany’s trade with China rose 2.1 per cent, while the Netherlands remained the third-largest partner at $246.74 billion, up 3.3 per cent, according to Destatis.
